About the Instructor

Linda Heiny specializes in teaching dressage, as well as using cavaletti and gymnastics for remedial flatwork and jumping.  While she enjoys working with all breeds, she relates exceptionally well to hot-blooded horses and is particularly gifted with off-the-track thoroughbreds.

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Linda rode extensively in clinics with Michael Handler, Betty Howett F.B.H.S., Michael Matthews, and Col. Jerome Weikert, all preeminent and influential trainers.  Under their instruction, she schooled many horses, several of which were considered temperamentally and/or conformationally ill-suited for dressage, through all the levels.

Linda taught and trained at White River Stables, the dressage and combined training facility she owned in Carmel, Indiana.  Two U.S. Pony Club dressage teams won Regional Championships and achieved National honors under her coaching.  She completed the small ‘r’ judging program early in her career and continues to be a popular judge for schooling shows.

While no longer able to ride academically, Linda has been instrumental in bringing Bettina Drummond to Indiana.  As a participating auditor, Linda attends as many clinics as possible, particularly those taught by Ms. Drummond or by visiting Bereiters of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna.

Linda’s priority in her teaching is developing a more harmonious partnership between horse and rider.  She shows the rider how to enhance the horse’s natural gaits and establish confidence, trust, and clear communication.  As a result, the horse becomes a willing partner who enjoys the work and is eager to please.
